Brazil: Manaus, Caixuana, Braganca

Sandra Patino and Beto Quesada made a rapid trip to undertake soil and foliar sampling at some of the key scientific sites in central and eastern Amazonia. Central Amazonian forest near Manaus is one of the most intensively studied regions in the Amazon, with detailed information on pattens of biomass allocation and carbon fluxes. At Caxuiana an on-going drought experiment is revealing possible physiological responses of the forest to climate change. In contrast, Braganca is a fascinating mangrove forest, where the tidal cycle has an important influence on the patterns of carbon exchange.
