Brazil: Mato Grosso

With assistance from Nicholau Priante and colleagues (Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso in Cuiaba), a group including Jon Lloyd (Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry) , Beto Quesada and Alexandre Santos (Universidade de Brasilia) and Marcus Silveira (University de Acre) established one hectare permanent sample plots at two locations: The LBA site in transitional forest near Sinop and just inside the rain forest region "proper" near Cristalino Jungle Lodge ( www.cristalinolodge.com.br), just north of Alta Floresta; also sampling both sites for soil and foliar nutrients and canopy structure. The transitional forest at Sinop was notable for its low species diversity, small overall tree size and low biomass, wheras the forest at Cristalino (just 200 km north) was much more like typical central Amazonian forest in its structure and composition. Soil and foliar samples taken as part of this fieldtrip (and subsequently taken elsewhere in Brazil) are being analysed in the laboratory of Dr.Flavio Luizão in Manaus. Most memebers of this specially selected Bicho Feio y Safado team managed to behave quite badly at at least some stage during this fieldtrip. Neverethtless, it seems we will be invited back to both sites.
